Ohzee: "Hotline"

Ohzee is a rapper from Oak Park, IL. He has performed at many venues and events throughout Chicago. Ohzee has released full-length projects like "The Tire Marks EP" previously thru Callosum. "Hotline" is his latest single release.

Ohzee crafts songs that not only function lyrically but sonically and structurally as well. Throughout the course of "Hotline" Ohzee develops an discordant relationship with the beat (produced by Bitoy Beatz) by playing off the ebb and flow of syncopated polyrhythms. The verses layer twos on top of threes on top of fives, building anticipation for a hook that settles back into a comfortable four.

Ohzee doesn't take his beat for granted, he interacts with it to tell a story. What begins as an effect of rhythmic bravado suddenly emerges as a demonstration of the meaning of his song: there's an inescapable disconnect between people who've been separated. A breakup can easily turn into a dizzying dance of motives and misconceptions – one day toxic, the next day loving – if not given proper time to heal.
